Brits Leathers

The sister tannery that turns hides from the Springs abattoir into leather.

The tannery

From the abattoir to the tannery.

Brits Leathers is the sister company of Morgan Beef at Brits, North West.

Hides from the Springs abattoir are preserved on the day of slaughter and transported to the tannery, where they are processed into leather.

The abattoir's status for hides: Approved source of hides and skins for export. The tannery supplies leather to customers in South Africa and abroad.

Responsible leather

The aims of the Leather Working Group.

Brits Leathers works to the aims of the Leather Working Group (LWG), the international multi-stakeholder group for the leather industry. The aims below are the LWG's stated goals, attributed to the LWG; they are not Morgan Beef's claims of achievement.

01

Ethical and sustainable production

The LWG states its purpose as to promote and uphold ethical and sustainable leather production.

02

Deforestation- and conversion-free supply

The LWG has set a goal of a deforestation- and conversion-free leather supply chain by 2030.

03

Carbon neutrality

The LWG has set a goal of carbon neutrality for the leather supply chain by 2050.

Why one group

A hide is traced like a carcass.

Because the abattoir and the tannery belong to the same group, each hide can be traced to the slaughter date and the batch of cattle it came from, in the same records that trace the meat.

That record is what a leather customer needs for a supply-chain claim, and it is what the LWG's audit protocol asks a tannery to show.
